Should We Rebuild Our Website or Improve It?
Rebuild when the platform or structure blocks the business. Improve when the problem is messaging, content or conversion — which it usually is.
Rebuild when the platform or information architecture genuinely blocks what the business needs. Improve when the problem is messaging, content or conversion — which it usually is. A rebuild resets search visibility, consumes months, and frequently ships the same unclear positioning in a nicer layout, because nobody addressed the actual problem.
Rebuild when
- The platform cannot support what you need, or the stack is unmaintainable.
- Performance or mobile experience is failing and cannot be fixed incrementally.
- The structure no longer matches how the business sells — you have grown into three business lines on a site built for one.
Improve when
- Traffic arrives but does not convert. That is a messaging and conversion problem, not a code problem.
- Some pages perform well. Those are assets; a rebuild puts them at risk for no gain.
- The site simply looks dated. Design refreshes do not require starting over.
The honest test
Write down what you expect to improve and by how much. If the answer is "it will look more modern," that is a design project. If you cannot express the benefit commercially, a rebuild will not deliver one.
